Synopsis
Enable easy creation of a rule to tune out of an email thread.

If the thread is of no interest (and I keep getting messages because someone chose to stick me in the cc list) I rightclick, choose 'Tune out'. This creates a rule based on the message thread id. From that point on all messages in this thread get routed to a folder (or deleted - configurable option).

Detail
The benefits of an opt in approach to the information overload conundrum has been one of the arguments underpinning the use of feeds to replace emails. The inbox remains a different story. You cannot control who sends you emails or when.

Notes 8 has a nifty indicator that shows the level to which an email is directed at me - if I'm the only recipient, one of a few, cc'd or one of many. However, I still can't get away from those threads where I'm cc'd in and the discussion is of no relevance. Yet, like most mail clients, Notes can trace a threaded conversation.

I can easily create rules to shunt emails into trash (based on the subject), but I thought it would be nice to be able to right-click on a message and say 'Tune out of conversation'. This would create a rule (based on the thread id) that will move all future emails in this thread to a configurable location (trash or a folder, potentially marking them as read along the way).

Over time the number of rules may grow to such an extent that performance suffers, so rules of this nature could auto-destruct after a month or two, or when the list grows beyond a certain size.

I like the idea.
How about turning off the tap at the source? Threads are not like unsolicited spam that is best quarantined once received. In the case that you describe wouldn't you ask to be taken out of a particular loop?

Hi Slawek,

You're not wrong, but it's a matter of scale. You can't control when someone decides to cc you on a message. Where I work people cc far too much, and I agree there's a training need to stop this - but it's an organisation of 10,000 people? I certainly can't reply to an email in which I've been cc'd and ask everyone to remove my name if they reply. The best I can do is have a quiet word with the originator and try to help them to understand when it is appropriate to cc. It will take a long time to see that have a noticeable impact on my inbox though.

In the mean time, I just want to be able to tune out on a conversation by conversation basis.

Apropos scale: How do you think should the list of "tuned out" conversations be stored? How would a entry of this list ever be removed? I think, depending on the environment, these lists could get VERY big. And having the feature, I fear, more people would get cc-ed, because they can tune out.
4) Richard Kernick123 (30 Nov 2007)
Thomas,

I did address the issue of scale and suggested rules for 'tuned out' conversations self destruct after a period of time or once the number of tuned out conversations reaches a threshold.

Demote because if something is in a thread later that is relevant to your job, you would be accountable. Best to ask to be removed from the thread, or put it in a project folder for later. Because with rules, you can send a mail message to a folder -- slightly less than what you want, but it would work.
