Very old idea that I could have used in many occasions: a "Deleters" field: who can delete this document? It would be the solution to have real owner control over Deferred mail (see what's hot at the right :-).
Similar fields: NonReaders (Richard Schwartz), and one could think of more of these special fields.

Fail to see any good reason for having this. You can do this today by having users placed in a group that is Authors, and then unselect "Delete Documents" property in the ACL for that group. Voilą - they can author, edit their own documents, but not delete.
If You need them to be able to delete, but only some documents; Have them in an author-group that has Delete Documents rights, and have that group present in the Authors field of the document.
