Turn on the email preferences for ideas posted and commented on by default. This will get people returning to the site to keep updated. I've found most users don't know to go edit it and turn them on as a feature unless you tell them.

We didn't turn these on by default just because we are paranoid about becoming seen as a spam mail sender. But we should certainly highlight that the mail options are available on your profile.

Could you make it a configurable option by the admin? I can understand the concern, but my problem is getting people hooked into the site and returning to see new ideas/comments/ updates, etc. Sites like Myspace and Facebook turn the email notification by default for that very purpose. If the user gets annoyed they can always go in and turn it off.
For a public site like yours I can understand the spam concern, but for an internal business site, we're not going to be added to an internal spam blacklist :)
