I think a good idea is create a Notes Client only for POP3 and SMTP, with the same interface of Notes Client Full. The objective is have another choice for personal mail, and training of the end users with the Lotus Notes Interface. Today many users using the Lotus Notes on Office and Outlook Express at Home.

Do you remember the Notes R5 Private Edition? It wasn't very successful, was it? Why repeat what didn't work?

Ok, why did R5 PE bomb? In my opinion, Notes as POP3/SMTP mail client is not as good as the free alternatives, e. g. Mozilla Thunderbird, which is an excellent mail client, and superior to Notes in this task (Anti-SPAM, tagging).

What makes Notes/Domino a world class platform is everything beyond mail: replication, applications, rights management etc. Just giving away the Notes client does not make sense in my opinion. Either put at least the Domino Designer into the package, simplify installation and usage even more, spend time and money on documentation for the private end-user and marketing, or let it alone at all.

What would have more effect (in my opinion, again) is to support pupils and students, colleges and universities. Give away client and server at no cost for education, send IBM employees and partners into the universities to teach Notes/Domino, workflow, information and knowledge management, etc.

As someone who uses a Notes client as his only client (ok I have a yahoo mail account when all else fails) I don't see the logic in this request.
Either use the full client or not, but if you want a simple home client, this just will never be it.
The R5 and other "Notes lite" clients just never did enough or were too much effort to maintain.
Now using this as a webmail base for people might get further than as a home pop/imap client.

I think Notes/Domino should be OpenSource, it would really speed up the development. IBM still gets enough money from POWER6+ CPU systems, as there are no noname-POWERx system that I know of :)

If Thomas entered his idea of putting Notes/Domino in education and sending BPs in after it was entered into IdeaJam I would vote for it.

I understand the concept behind your idea.

The reason why we as Domino administrators/developers have such a hard time in every single company out there with people complaining about having to use Lotus Notes instead of Outlook or Exchange, is that many people use Outlook at home because it comes with the operating system.

They've seen it before, it's familiar, and it's pretty user friendly.

Lotus Notes is radically different, and it's not always intuitive as a User Interface.

I'm not voting on this item, but I do understand what you are trying to say.

A better alternative would be to push even harder beyond Notes 8.01 to force IBM to improve the UI.
