Notes Client / Other: Add Synchronize Notebook on Replicator page similar to Synchronize Contacts

Author: Tinus Riyanto
Tags: journal notebook synchronize
Idea:

In 8.5.1 we finally have Synchronize Contacts on the replicator page, therefore it would be logical that Synchronize Notebook / Journal be place there also thus avoiding the need for user to manually click menu Action - Lotus iNotes - Synchronize Notebook every time they wanted to synchronize.

If the option is put on replicator page at the very least it can run along with the client's replication schedule.

Notes Client / Other: Add the ability to open another person's Notebook on Notes Client similar to iNotes

Author: Tinus Riyanto
Tags: journal delegation
Idea:

I am not talking about local personal journal but the embedded journal that can be viewed on iNotes (I think those document is stored on $Journal view of the mail file). On iNotes there is an option to open another journal and be able to (at least) view those documents. On Notes client i haven't found an easy way to do this. Using menu View - Goto on the user who got the delegation it does not list $Journal view on the view / folder window. Perhaps because this view is not a public access view ?

I know that Notebook / Journal implementation on Notes client and iNotes is different but our end user does not care. They wanted both to behave the same way or else they got confused. I guess this would mean extending Notes Client mail file delegation to notebook in addition to existing delegation of mail, calendar and to do.

This and the synchronize notebook option have started to give me headache.

Notes Client / Mail: Add thesaurus functionality to Notes Mail

Author: Tinus Riyanto
Tags: mail thesaurus
Idea:

I am not sure why nobody have asked for this before but someone just asked me if Notes mail have a built in thesaurus function. After some searching around, I can only found two workaround for this.

1. Lotus Sandbox - Thesaurus (link)

This code requires that Microsoft word is installed on the same machine as the client since it accessed the Office Thesaurus functionality. It would not work without it and it might not work properly if someday Microsoft decided to change the way the implement thesaurus on Word.

2. Use Live Text to lookup to an online dictionary site.

This would be feasible for client's with direct Internet connection. CMIIW I don't think it will work if the client use an authenticated proxy to access Internet.

Perhaps someone have a better alternative than those two ?

Domino Server / Directory: Allow storage of Domino person document on an external directory and authenticate against it

Author: Tinus Riyanto
Tags: directory indepence external directory
Idea:

Basically all (or some) of the information previously stored on Domino Directory via Person document form would be instead stored on an external directory (preferably LDAP). I am aware that there are informations that is exclusive to Domino like mail server and mail file. For these information if possible additional field should be created on the external directories to store them but this is technically not possible they can still be stored on Domino Directory.

Another critical function would be the ability for Domino to authenticate it's user against that external directory thus eliminating the need to synchronize your password over multiple directories. I don't really like password synchronization since they took time to "replicate". I am not saying that Notes should discard the usage of user ID. With ID Vault I think it is still possible for ID to be downloaded to local terminal whenever a user login and deleted if they log out or close the client.

I am well aware that what I suggested sounded very much like Directory Independence but said feature is yet to be published and thus is feasible to change in implementation or even being canceled all together.

Author: Peter Presnell
Comment: Many companies already do store lots of the personal data in fields outside of the Domino Directory. I think it is a great shame a greater effort isn't made to allow companies to sync this data without requiring each and every company to develop there own sync programs. Notes applications (especially workflow) can be made a lot simpler if I can use the built in functions to extract data from the Domino Directory rather than a 3rd part source.
Traveler / : Clustering Support for Traveler Server

Author: Tinus Riyanto
Tags: clustering traveler
Idea:

Until know there is no way to built a cluster of traveler servers so that they can do automatic fail over upon themselves when one of them had a problem. Please add this feature so that traveler can be a trully scalable solution.

I even understand if clustering support would be added in a paid per user version of this since only company with a large number traveler users or those with mission critical availability would need this. Having this feature on the free version would be a big plus just like recent announcement of clustering support for Domino express.

Traveler / : Traveler client for Blackberry

Author: Tinus Riyanto
Tags: blackberry traveler
Idea:

Currently traveler lack a blackberry client, thus hindering their implementation on places where blackberry population is abundant. I understand that BES Express can be used to connect those "non-enterprise" blackberry to Domino mail server but deploying another BES server in places where there already is a traveler server means paying additional server license, right ?

Therefore in companies that already have traveler server it made more sense for Traveler to have blackberry clients instead of deploying BES Express server.

Domino Server / Messaging router: Made Out of Office reply sent to the Send By address in case of mail sent by delegated personnel

Author: Tinus Riyanto
Tags: out-of-office delegation send-by
Idea:

As far as I know, there are companies with a habit of sending a company wide announcement from the Company's president address. Of course the actual person sending those email would be either his/her secretary or other trusted personnel with a delegated access to the president's mail file. So those email would arrive at the user with the president's name on the from field and the real sender of the send by field.

However if said user have out of office enabled, the one that got the reply would be the president instead of the real sender. In my opinion it would make more sense if the one listed on the send by field receive those out of office notification instead since they are the one that send the email.

Being able to toggle this behavior via some sort of server setting would be perfect.

Author: Oliver Regelmann
Comment: Isn't it yet possible to install two Traveler servers on a clustered pair of Domino servers and then use some kind of IP spreader or DNS round robin in front of them to distribute connections to both? The same way you'd do it for iNotes access?

Building a traveler cluster in a way we know it from Domino would mean to tell the clients to look for another server when one's unreachable. I don't think it would be easy (for IBM) to modify for example an iPhone's Exchange account to do that.
Lotus Technical Information / Other: Book Proposal: Migrating to LotusLive

Author: Tinus Riyanto
Tags: book proposals lotuslive
Idea:

This is response to Ben Langhinrichics' request for book proposals.

I figure that within a year or two Lotus Live might evolve into something that most company would consider seriously as they add more feature to it. When that time comes it would be handy to have a book explaining to those prospective customers how easy it is to migrate (part or all) of your existing environment to Lotus Live.

At the very least I think that this book should cover the following topics

Explanation of what is Lotus Live (what it can and cannot do). For example can I migrate my existing lotus notes application to Lotus Live ?

How to made Lotus Live coexist with your existing environment

How to completely migrate your existing environment to Lotus Live

Troubleshooting Lotus Live problem (how is it different with on-site domino troubleshooting)

Lotus Technical Information / Sametime: Book Proposal: Implementing Lotus Sametime 8.5.x

Author: Tinus Riyanto
Tags: book proposals sametime
Idea:

This is response to Ben Langhinrichics' request for book proposals.

I know that there is already a slide outlining what it takes to deploy all the component of sametime 8.5.x but I felt that there are many things left unexplained to those that read it. From my own experience of installing Sametime Gateway by relying on the Info Center I knew that this can be a painful trial and error process (especially for those with no experience on Websphere Application Server). Therefore having a detail book to guide you throughout the process would be very helpfull.

I figure that this book would need to cover the following topics

Explanation of the functionality for each Sametime Component

Planning of Sametime deployment and upgrade

Brief explanation about Websphere Application Server (common terminology, how to find various item like cell-name, logs, etc)

Brief explanation about DB2 (common terminology, how to do various important things like indexing the database, assigning access right, etc)

Guide for deploying new Sametime environment

Guide for upgrading your Sametime environment

I understand that the last two topics would be so monstrous that the limited 100 page would not be enough to cover even one of them. Therefore I would appreciate and idea on how to streamline this.
