Notes Client / Mail: Stamp correct timestamp on mail retrieved via POP

Author: David Hablewitz
Tags: POP mail
Idea:

Currently mail retrieved via POP gets the date/timestamp of when it was retrieved via POP, not the date/time it was delivered to the mailbox This effectively changes the date/time it appears to have been sent, ruining the fidelity of the message as well as dimishing the value of the date/timestamp. (though if you delete the message and then view it in the trash folder, it does display the correct date/timestamp in the header there.)

This is a real problem when replying or forwarding a message as the date/time stamp of the original message does not match what the original sender expects.

Please correctly map these fields in mail retrieved via POP.

Notes Client / Mail: Define destination mail file for POP mail in Account Doc

Author: David Hablewitz
Tags: POP Accounts
Idea:

Currently all mail retrieved via POP goes into the mail file as defined by the Location document. So if you pull, say, your personal mail from a Yahoo account via POP (defined by an Account document in your address book), then it all gets dumped into your work mailbox. Currently the only way to do this is to create a different location document that defines a different mail file. You have to switch back and forth to send mail from each mailbox.

I propose that the Account document have fields added to define a different target mail file for the POP to be delivered, keeping work and personal mail separate. There should also be a way to send mail FROM that mailbox via a corresponding SMTP document also without having to switch locations.

Notes Client / Other: Eliminate modal dialog boxes!

Author: David Hablewitz
Tags: modal dialog dialogbox
Idea:

Get rid of all those modal dialog boxes. There are times when it is desirable or necessary, but those are rare. And Notes 8 makes it worse. For example, in previous releases clicking on the location then Edit Current would open the location document as another tab. Now, it opens a dialog box which restricts one from navigating to other documents or views to examine or copy data from them and paste into the location document being edited. That entire properties dialog box should just open like any other document.

Another example: An administrator gets an email to create a new user. He goes to the admin client and clicks on the Register User function. It opens a modal dialog box that prevents returning to the client to view the email to copy and paste information like the name, so there is less room for error. At least in previous releases, one could switch back to the Notes client to view the email provided it was the last active window there before opening the Register User function in the Admin client. Once the dialog is opened, everything else related to Notes is frozen INCLUDING SAMETIME CHATS! You can't even respond to a chat until you finish creating the new user and close the dialog box.

Author: John Head
Comment: I promoted this because I want the InfoBox to become a sidepanel. Just like what Symphony does .. and not part of the Sidebar. The Symphony team actually got that idea from a working model MBR and her team did at the Notes 8 SDR back in Westford in 2005. Time for Notes to do the same.

As for preferences, I am pretty sure you are out of luck there. One of the things that using Eclipse.org and Lotus Expeditor comes with is that you have to use the core features, including the preferences, toolbar, status bar, and more. Plus, I like having all of the preferences in a single location. Having them inside each database was a PITA
Notes Client / Mail: Feature to see the total size of selected docs OR display a total for size column in mail folders

Provide the ability to see the total size of a group of emails (or other documents). Or at least put a total on the size column in mailbox folders and views. This will help manage mail file size. For a comparison, in Windows File Explorer, you can select a folder or a group of files, right click and select Properties to see the cumulative size of the selection.

Domino Server / Directory: Allow multiple addresses for group and mail-in database docs like person docs do

Author: David Hablewitz
Tags: groups alias username fields
Idea:

A person can receive mail for multiple addresses by putting them in the Username field. Groups and mail-in databases do not have this ability, so another group or mail-in database must be created for each possible address. That's a nightmare when the company changes their internet email domain. (like going from @federalexpress.com to @fedex.com) and you want it to work for both addresses.

Either make the internet address field for these documents accept multi-values (this is possible because mail is never sent out from them, only received) or add a field similar to the username field on person documents.

Author: John Head
Comment: Ove - The Notes 8 preferences panel is just an Eclipse plug-in point. Just like you can extend the Notes 8 Sidebar and Menu and toolbar, you can extend the preferences. There are loads of tutorials on how to do that. Just google for it.

Now, tieing those to your Notes application will be a bit harder ... I have not seen anyone do that yet. But it is very doable.
Create a global domain document with your primary domain (new company domain). On the 3rd tab called conversions, there is a field called "Alternate Internet domain aliases:" enter the companies old domain there, or any other domain that you want to be valid.

Of course, you have to have MX records for all domains and they have to point to your inbound SMTP gateways.

person or group document only needs one of the domains in the Internet address field.

if your primary is domaina.com, list domainb.com and domainc.com in the alternate domains field.

Then usera@domaina.com can receive mail if it is addressed to usera@domainb.com and usera@domainc.com.

re: Define destination mail file for POP mail in Account Doc

Author: David Hablewitz
Comment: That is a valid arguement for outbound mail. But inbound POP mail would have no problem being directed to a specific mailbox for each account. Also, it is undesirable to have to switch locations constantly to check each POP account, then back to your standard work account. It is important to pull in POP mail in a timely manner for 2 reasons: 1. So it can be seen and acted upon in a timely fashion. 2. So it gets a timestamp close to the correct timestamp the message was delivered. (see my other post on this)

That said, I expect relatively few people actually use the POP feature based on the lack of responses until Notes becomes consumer software as well as business software.
Author: David Hablewitz
Comment: Yep. (BTW, with person docs that only works for the primary address. Not for other addresses listed in the person's username field.) But that does not allow for multiple addresses to point to one group or mail-in database. For example, support@domain.com and customersupport@domain.com and customer.support@domain.com. I have many needs for aliases in groups and mail-in databases. It would be much cleaner and easier to manage if they were handled similar to person docs for addressing.
