Domino Designer / : Allow users to sort within categories of a view.

A view might be sorted by date or by model. The user finds the model they are looking for and then would like that category sorted by serial number or date or customer name, but only for that model.

re: Allow users to sort within categories of a view.

Author: Peter Presnell
Comment: I am not sure if this is something that could be implemented within the model we have for views. Views work using pre-built indices. A sort within a category must be defined in advance so the index can be built. There is no mechanism to build an index on the fly. I would not suggest we redefine the way views work just to handle this one scenario. I would design a view that has a secondary sort on the column you mention.
re: Allow users to sort within categories of a view.

Author: Carl Rizzo
Comment: Thanks for the reply Peter. I thought this might be difficult for Notes. In Excel the user can sort by a column and then choose the next sorted column and so on. My users want to be able to do the same thing. As a developer it is difficult for me to please everyone without creating 10 or 15 or more views. I use the click on header to sort often and even that can really confuse users for some reason. Maybe a bigger visual clue than just the colored in up arrow would help. I think I can use the seconday sort feature more often than I do and it will help, but ussrs that are more used to excel find it easy to critisize a view that just looks like a spreadsheet to them and they want to know why it can't behave like one. Thank again Peter. This idea jam thing is awsome.
Author: Peter Presnell
Comment: I agree. At the view level we should have similar options as we have with outline entries and be able to change the text font and background color. I would prefer to see the ability to associate CSS styles.
Author: Carl Rizzo
Comment: I do see how you might think it not too important, but I run into this all the time.

The first thing you want to do after you create a form is usually create a view for the docs created with that form. I would rather be able to pick a form than a default view to base my new view off of. I just completed an ROI Db where I imported most of the data. I had five forms with about 20 fields each. I need each column in the view so I can see that the data was imported correctly.

The other scenario that I run into is I am adding a field to a view and it is a Db with many forms. I have many forms in some DB's that go back to before I was the developer, so I can't always remember the name of each field. I have to go and open the form where the field is to see what the name was so I can add it to the view.

Thanks
