I agree that Microsoft Office is pretty good at this, and I think that support for multi-lingual Notes users should be improved.

Notes does support multi-language spell checking, but it's REALLY fiddly to get it to work, especially on an existing user's PC.

It's understandable why the OpenNTF template is no longer in production. In the Domino 8.5.x codestream, many new mail features were added into the mail template, and mailboxes were upgraded by default when you installed a patch.

Nevertheless, it is so easy for a new user of Lotus to laugh out loud at a mailbox design which includes a Views section, but no views held within it.

I hope others find this strange too and more promote the idea!

What do administrators commonly do? Add their own views in, protect them from the Design task and hope that they'll work in future releases?

I recall from the Notes 9 demo that the Views section was empty in the Notes 9 mailbox too!

@7 - the request you link to is different. That is about the delegation of leavers' meetings to a new chairperson.

My request is for active users to have the ability to delegate their meetings to someone else.

Of course, it should read "CTRL + ALT as you switch to the calendar view".

i see the logic of the idea, but this would only make Lotus Notes data run even more slowly.

I promoted this, but I think you'll find that this is a feature restricted to third party archiving softwares.

I have had this conversation with several IT Managers in the past...

"For mail archiving. you could take the free option, provided natively by Domino, but your users will need to search their archives separately from their live mailboxes. They have to search twice."

"Hmmm... Management won't like that - will a third party utility do it?"

"Yes - most of them will. ReduceMail Pro or IONET Archiver for Notes do the job perfectly. If you want to spend more, we could look at Tivoli..."

"Ok - look into it..."

It's not just Outlook that has this (and has since 1997 if I'm not mistaken...), even Gmail has it! :)

I fully agree with this. I think there are other similar ideas on the site, particularly relating to being able to refresh a current folder using F9 instead of the entire Domino data directory.

One tip which might be useful - the notes.ini parameter "admin_client_skip_domino=1" will apparently skip the Domino folder.

Totally agree. IBM's licensing core-based licensing model for SMBs is a mess.

IBM generally do not advocate customisations to the Domino Directory, and if it's so simple, they should add the functionality themselves.

Nathan, I promote this idea, as the UI should really contain this info, but:

1. You're right about the "undocumented" feature to remove deletion stubs from the replica. It really works. I find setting the value to 1, then to 0 to be the most effective way of doing it.

2. Try running compact -D and updall -R against the database to flush any remaining deletion stubs.

3. You must do this on every replica of the database in order to get best results. if that's a Domino Directory, and you've got 50 servers, hard luck!

4. Notespeek can be used to identify if there are any more stubs in the database. It's an old tool, but a good one.

Agree with @16.

We add users to a deny list first, then delete later. That usually covers all of the anomalies, but you sometimes get people coming back after extended maternity leave who need to be restored. It happens.

Great idea. Promoted, any admin who lives in the real world with an inefficient HR department will promote it too!

There are plenty of other issues with the 8.5 client, but this isn't one of them.

@Chris - what you propose simply doesn't work. When a user performs an address lookup, the server's access to the Domino Directory is used, NOT the user's.

Consequently, if the user knows the first few characters of the name of the group, they will be able to send mail to it.

Try to demo your proposal to a half-experienced CIO who gets bugged by complaints about people sending rubbish to all users via email, and you will end up feeling rather embarrassed.

This is a real requirement by real users, rather than many of the other ideas on this site which are "nice to haves" in my humble opinion. C'mon guys, get promoting!

Several customers have complained to me about this, I've often ended up removing the "Copy to Personal Address book" button from the Directory. Users expect Notes to synch / replicate. Whilst the terminology used to title the button (Copy) is a correct definition - users still expect this to mean "Sync"

Agreed, but Notes should be able to do this anyway - after all, the database knows where the archive is, so it should be feasible to extend the search facility to cater for this.

@4 I've seen Notes 5 client versions (5.0.11 in particular) where the ncompact.exe wasn't present, and had to copy it to the user's PC manually.

Thanks Bill, will do (found an email address on your website). I'm sure you're not the only one to request this feature from IBM. Perhaps a big financial customer who pays enormous license fees should threaten to move to Exchange unless they add this feature? That'd do it ;-) !

Bulk mail is another problem, and there are other ideas on this site for avoiding this risk.

The bigger picture to this for me is that why does IBM support and offer hierarchical structures within Notes when you can do very little with them? Policies? Big deal! What about reporting on number of emails sent / received by an OU? Or my idea - just to send an email to everyone in an OU?

Sorry to extol the virtues of Exchange in this Forum but... it has been possible to enforce who can email a group since Exchange 97, maybe before! Surely this can't be such a complicated request.

It should be clearly visible in the group document: "Senders to this group", with users, a group, or an OU set there. A simple idea, but how to do it?

Using document properties is not an option to me to resolve this question. Users should be able to clearly see who can email a group.

Agreed with the points above about type-ahead, and a server rule can cause false positives, and give us admins more headaches.

Sorry to be posing comments and not answers, but I just wanted to say something - this feature is one of the common user complaints from Exchange users who join a Notes house!

I think something like this is in the OpenNTF Team mailbox template? I've only just recently downloaded it, but it seems that the feature is there according to the help file.
