Outline/Navigator for xPages (25 May 2009)

I wanted to put my outline on my xpage and was googling how to do it, cause I couldn't find it when I found this page. Can't believe it's not already there!

Sametime on Linux (07 Oct 2008)

I installed a Sametime server on Linux the other day and after I managed the installer to run on an not officially supported platform, it actually all went like a breeze and has been running rock solid since. I therefore wonder if there are enough differences between a Sametime installation on Linux compared to a Sametime installation on Windows to fill an entire session with. Could you elaborate on what you would like to cover?

Getting To WOW......Interface First Design For Lotus Notes Developers (30 Sep 2008)

Great to hear. I would stick with Thomas' title. Liked that one most. Hopefully I'll be able to attend your session.

Templates, Templates Everywhere - If You Know Where to Look (27 Sep 2008)

This idea is linked with the Best Practices for new Notes Developers idea of Karl-Henry Martinson, but I don't see the link. Linked by mistake?

10 Things to Consider when Developing & Deploying Applications in Large Scale Environments (26 Sep 2008)

Ok, one last comment about this. I actually didn't know what was exactly meant by "astroturfing". On Wikipedia I found this description:
"Astroturfing is a form of propaganda whose techniques usually consist of a few people attempting to give the impression that mass numbers of enthusiasts advocate some specific cause."
If I understand from this that both Rocky and Andrew are under impression that multiple votes for this idea were casted by one and the same person then I can say with complete confidence that that simply isn't true. I recognize many names of people who voted here and the Dutch sounding names Andrew mentioned are all very real people who are well known in the Dutch Lotus world. They are also the kind of people that would read my blog entry calling on them to come here and vote for their favourite sessions. So Rocky, I don't know if this can restore your confidence in the Lotus community, but apart from my overenthusiastic colleague whose entries were quickly removed by Matt, there hasn't been any astroturfing that I'm aware of.

Running your IBM Lotus Domino server on Linux (25 Sep 2008)

I believe this kind of a session would be better in a hands-on style. When I, years back, saw a session like this it gave me more of a "Wow, that looks interesting" feeling than a "He, I can easily do that myself". The latter is the one you should be aiming for I think, as the first won't get many people to move their Domino servers from Windows to Linux.

10 Things to Consider when Developing & Deploying Applications in Large Scale Environments (25 Sep 2008)

Andrew, I disagree on many points of your comment. First let me point out that almost all ideas have a number of unique votes (voters who only voted for that particular idea and nowhere else). Mine is in no way unique in that. Check for example the current category leader who has a lot of them. If you would take out the unique votes for all session ideas, my idea would still be in the top 5. That does count for something and gives me and hopefully Mac a good impression that there is interest from the community in this idea (and I strongly believe this is a good subject for a BP session).
Secondly this category has proved useful for people who proposed multiple session ideas to show which of those ideas would be best for a BP session. Check for example the ideas of Jack Ratcliff. He posted two ideas at the same time. One gets 23 points, the other 10. That is a good indication that the latter should probably not be considered for a BP session.
Finally this category has given useful feedback to people on how to put their idea in a hour long presentation. I got two valuable comments on my idea and so have others on theirs. I wouldn't have had these comments if we didn't use IdeaJam for this.

It seems you have the impression that Mac & Rocky will choose the BP sessions based on the scoring here. They have said many times already that it will be just one tiny aspect they take along in their choice.

I'm going to leave it at this and not react further on any comments that are not about my session idea. If you would like to discuss this further, please use email (martdj@martdj.nl).

10 Things to Consider when Developing & Deploying Applications in Large Scale Environments (25 Sep 2008)

Andrew, I can understand your concern and if votes are illegally obtained it is of course important to make it known to the appropriate parties. Earlier in the voting I did have a voting issue with a collegue of mine, which has since thankfully been fixed. However in this instance, I do feel that you need to check your facts properly first before making such an incriminating accusation.

Of course there are many people voting in this category that usually never vote on Ideajam. Almost all people here that proposed BP sessions have personal blogs and invited their readers to come and vote for them here on IdeaJam. Almost all of these readers are people who are very interested in Lotusphere. Many of them regular attendees. This gives this category a completely different crowd from the normal IdeaJam crowd and I believe that is what Mac Guidera was hoping for as it gives a better idea which session ideas are popular among regular Lotusphere attendees instead of just among the more limited regular IdeaJam crowd.
It seems to also attract quite an international crowd as my idea is definitely not the only one getting votes early in the/your morning.

I did check the votes on other ideas after your comment and saw that at least half of the names in your comment did vote for other ideas as well. I think that is the whole idea of this IdeaJam category. People come and vote for what they feel are the best session ideas. Most of them however only get triggered once by someones blog entry and give their votes to the ideas that are availabe at that time.

Clustering Best Practices and the finally fixed SAI (23 Sep 2008)

Hi Daniel,
You're not the only one proposing a session on Clustering. Seeing you're also kind of the Domino on Linux guru (at least that's how I see you because of your brilliant start/stop scripts), maybe it's an idea to meet up with Charles Robinson who wants to do a clustering in comination with Linux session and do a session together?

A new approach to internationalizing Domino applications (22 Sep 2008)

I agree that the Global Workbench in rather unusable for this. I always use a bunch of profile documents and computed texts. I'm curious if your solution also uses those

10 Things to Consider when Developing & Deploying Applications in Large Scale Environments (22 Sep 2008)

Pressed the submit button too soon. As reaction to your good suggestions:
- I fully agree that you have to keep your number of views as small as possible, yet you do have to stick to good development standards to not mix lookup & user views. I would like to spend some time during the presentation on the importance of proper view bulding for the performance and size of your applications.
- deletion stubs will definitely be one of the "things" I'll be talking of including horror stories and code examples. Best way to deal with them in large environments is to prevent them from being created by re-using your documents as much as possible. If you can't prevent them, then yes reducing the purge interval can be a good option and I'm planning on showing a code example how to easily do that (as manually setting them in large environments is hell).

@16. Good points. Thanks!

Lotus Notes and Me: Maximizing Personal Productivity with Lotus Notes (15 Sep 2008)

@6 That depends on how Eric fills this in. Lotusphere traditionally is quite technology oriented showing the latest and greatest in the Lotus brand. I think we can all agree that Lotus has a set of fantastic products with great possibilities, but if the users don't know those possibilities or don't know how they would be useful in their daily work then those possibilities go to waste. If Eric will focus on how people can use the Lotus products more effectively in their daily work then I think such a session should be on LS. If he does focus more on adding even more technology to help you (like OpenNTF Mail & eProductivity), then I would withdraw my support for this idea as well.

Adminblast 2009 (12 Sep 2008)

Good point. I missed your presentation last (this?) year, so I haven't experienced the format. The abstract gave me the feeling of too much in too short a time, but it might just work. Looking forward to see it live.

Adminblast 2009 (12 Sep 2008)

Paul, just as a question: 60 questions in an hour will be less then a minute per tip considering introducton and question time. That's not enough to really dive into any tip and you say yourself you'll focus on the slide deck. Why would people then visit your presentation at all instead of just downloading it and browsing through the slides themselves?

Best Practices for New Admins (11 Sep 2008)

@4 I'm not saying a session like this wouldn't be useful, cause I do believe it would be. I'm just saying that you might want to rethink that first line of your abstract when you submit this one on the Lotusphere site. A session like this could for example be useful for developers for whom a little more admin knowledge definitely wouldn't hurt, but you might not reach them if your title and abstract focus so much on new admins. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks Matt. Much appreciated. I hope we can continue discussing the actual session topic from here on.

Domino Clustering and Server Migration Made Easy (10 Sep 2008)

I like the idea, but I do believe this session would be much better in a do-it-yourself setup. It is easy to setup a Domino server on Linux and to implement clustering, but I'm afraid it won't be easy to convince people of that unless they manage to actually build a Domino server on Linux themselves and cluster it with their buddy next to them. Otherwise you're still the big guru who managed to do in an hour, which they might feel they won't be able to do in an entire week.

10 Things to Consider when Developing & Deploying Applications in Large Scale Environments (10 Sep 2008)

Sjaak, thanks for your comment. I fully agree that a developer can´t develop a proper application that is meant for large scale deployment if he´s oblivious to the architecture of Lotus Domino in general and the architecture of the organisation´s environment in specific.
The session should therefore cover or at least mention the importance of understanding the replication structure and schedule of the domain, how to minimize replication traffic over slow connections, the impact of large amount of deletion stubs on an application´s performance and the possibility that some servers are still running older versions of Domino than you had in mind.

I know Andrew. Definitely not happy about this myself.

Could you also delete these last comments please as they take away the focus of the real discussion whether this topic would be a good one for the Best Practices track

All the Duijvelaar and blaauw ones except for Mike Duijvelaar I guess. That also includes their demotes of other entries.

Sorry Bruce. A colleague of mine really seems to want to get rid of me in January ;-).

Please someone create a session to demonstrate setting up self-registering on the web (09 Sep 2008)

It sounds like infrastructure from a web developers perspective. If you take that as a lead, it could include subjects like changing your mail quota and server based archiving period through a web application, redirecting to your or someone else's mailfile from a web application etc. Maybe that could fill up a whole session?

Lotus Notes and Me: Maximizing Personal Productivity with Lotus Notes (09 Sep 2008)

I've presented sessions like this years back when I was part of IBM working on the Collaborative Computing Team. The users we presented to did say they got a lot out of the sessions and also when interviewed months later, they told us that the sessions did make them use their IT tools (and Lotus Notes in specific) more efficiently. I therefore do believe that such a session would be a good thing. Interesting enough the few developers we managed to reach with these sessions also had to admit that they saw quite a few things that they didn't know about or didn't think of.
If your session makes it and you need more ideas on what to cover, please let me know and I'll send you a list of the topics we covered in our sessions.

Best Practices for New Admins (09 Sep 2008)

Keith, I think you're starting sentence doesn't work. How many of the "junior admins who never get training anymore" do you think will come to Lotusphere? I think close to 0...
