Enable Domino on Lotus Foundations to be configured to use standard HTTP ports 80/443 (25 May 2010)

@ Bruce Elgort - I think this can be closed now that IBM has implemented this. Thanks

Implement DAOS in Lotus Foundations (25 May 2010)

Absolutely!

Integrate Quickr Connectors into the Lotus Notes install, just as is done for Sametime (31 Jul 2009)

@Craig - good observation...I never thought of that "connection".

Enable Domino on Lotus Foundations to be configured to use standard HTTP ports 80/443 (31 Jul 2009)

@Robert

I agree with you. You have identified a weakness in the product and made it an opportunity, which is something big companies like IBM sometimes overlook. That said, its not a stretch to assert that this should be part of the base functionality.

Have Ctrl-T open a new browser tab in the Notes Client (14 Jul 2009)

Seems to be a defacto standard

Implement DAOS in Lotus Foundations (10 Jul 2009)

@Sean - I am sure that's the reason and suspect you have some insight there. The trick is to create a management process through Foundations WebConfig that can make restores simple. Even on the full Domino side its not that straightforward yet. Still the benefits like saving 40-60% disk space on average (depending on how the users use attachments in their mail) makes this a goal. Without DAOS the pain for Foundation shops will be the process of adding/upgrading disks when they run out of space.

Implement DAOS in Lotus Foundations (09 Jul 2009)

The current releae IS shipping with Domino 8.5. Transaction logging is running, but no DAOS. You're not really supposed to go in and change any of the config because the autonomics will revert the settings back.

Add configuration setting to easily enable Taskjam to work on alternate HTTP ports (08 Jul 2009)

@Bruce

I deleted the NTF/NSF and tried again and it worked fine. The only thing I can think of that I may have done differently is that in the ACL I only checked off the Admin role and left the User role unchecked. Perhaps the user role was inflicting some restrictions on copying documents, replication, etc. However even now when I check it off, I cannot duplicate the problem I was having. The application looks and works fine.
If the ACL roles have anything to do with it, the reason I would have picked both User and Admin roles is because normally in my applications the "Super User" is the one who gets all the roles, the logic being that the more roles you check the more permissions you get, not the less you get.

By the way, in the config, I simply entered hostname:special_port and its working fine. Having a port field (defaulting to 80) which is concatenated with the host field is still a good idea as I've run into too many other applications that assume we're running on port 80 and as a result various functions don't work. Alternatively, just updating the label for host name with "Fully_Qualified_Host_Name:Port" would accomplish the same thing.
Ok, now to dissect TJ and see what I can learn.

Thanks

Add configuration setting to easily enable Taskjam to work on alternate HTTP ports (08 Jul 2009)

@Bruce - OK, I'll give it a go. That's one way to learn XPages I guess :-)

It actually might not be a port issue at all. Is there some sort of copy-protection in the NTF? I dug a bit and found that the CSS did not actually copy over from the template to the NSF. I got a message when I tried to create the NSF from the NTF that I was not authorized. Then when I tried to manually copy over the CSS from the view (and also from the doc field in edit mode) I get a message that I am not authorized to copy or replicate this DB, though I am set as the DB manager with all the roles checked off in the ACL.

XPages - Native support for RDB access (07 Jul 2009)

@those comparing this request to the defunct NSFDB2:

As John pointed out NSFDB2 isn't comparable to this request. I haven't the foggiest why IBM chose to port the entire NSF itself into DB2 when all we really wanted was the ability to read/write from other databases using basic SQL in a way that was more flexible than LEI, LCLSX, and DECS. Being on the "i" platform at my org we never got to taste it (fortunately so or I for certain would have had egg on my face and a mountain of legacy apps). IBM bit off more than they could chew and it fell apart. This request to create a simple interface to non-notes data has a reasonable scope and is strategic with real world practical benefits. The only reason I could imagine IBM would not do it would be due to internal competition between product managers and a fear of cannibalizing their other product's profit margins. If you can do it in Notes, why pay big dollars for_____.

XPages - Native support for RDB access (07 Jul 2009)

I am primarily interested in access data to our "i" (i5/OS) through Xpages, but definitely Lotus Domino needs the other backends mentioned to become a serious player in the web dev world.
We have many apps accessing this data now through LCLSX and DECS, but its limited in what you can do.

DAOS enable Quickr on Domino (23 Jun 2009)

THIS IDEA HAS BEEN IMPLEMENTED in Quickr 8.2. I don't see where I can graduate this idea from Open to implemented. Bruce?

"Notify" through Sametime IM as well as email (02 Apr 2009)

Seems like an IM session is a poor place to put "things you need to get to". I'd have way more things fall through the cracks. I won't vote it down if you're talking about a user option verses an admin option.

DAOS enable Quickr on Domino (01 Mar 2009)

@Jon - Nope, Domino Q'r has it.

Give me a "What's New" view that shows recent activity related to my idea (01 Mar 2009)

@Bruce

Seems I can always count on you to push me to the next level to improve my Ideas. What a "collaborator" you are! (Why does "collaborator" still have negative connotations, like you're participated in robbing a bank or something?)

Moving right along...I did not know about the email notification function in the profile. I'll turn on that best kept secret and see how it improves my narcissistic cravings to know when my ideas are being promoted or knocked down.

I do wonder though as Vitor also speculates that email notification isn't the way to go for everyone. As you suggest, definitely a personalized "vanity page" (or vanity sidebar) that appears on login would be nice that summarizes recent activity related to your ideas. I'd do a mockup, but my employer hasn't responded to my request to purchase Balsamiq and that's the only way to go IMHO for prototyping, so, I'll just use words:

I imagine a big sidebar button titled "What's New with Your Ideas?" When clicked, a view is exposed (more likely an xpages repeating div) that lists your ideas sorted with the most recent activity on top. It says something like "3 new comments" and "+6 votes". Ideally, the stats should be based on last time you explicitly checked by clicking on that button. Stats should then restart. Its a piece of work, but I figure I'm worth it :-)

Add a download manager for saved attachments (26 Feb 2009)

Making a good solid upload and download manager part of the core product, which we can implement in applications would be very useful as well...especially if it's web-enabled too.

DAOS enable Quickr on Domino (26 Feb 2009)

@Bruce, I am not sure what you mean by the "50 people have replicas" point. I don't see DAOS as having any benefits related to replication. I do understand DAOS to have some benefits related to disk space, performance, and backup windows. I touched on some of the benefits, but here's a more complete version about my perceptions* of why Quickr and DAOS would be a good combo.

1. In file backups, a large Quickr place will need to be completely backed up, even for a small change. If the attachments are stored outside of the NSF, and are immutable, incremental backups are much faster and efficient.

2. CPU time to extract and store the requested attachment from the NSF should be lower because the files are already extracted and sitting on the file system. Performance* should be faster, particularly for very large places.

3. Deduplication of attachments, for those who are storing the same attachment in multiple Quickr places (e.g. for different audiences).

4. Larger places are possible because once you remove the attachments, the NSF is not likely to get anywhere close to the 64 GB limit. Your total place (NSF + Attachments) could potentially be in the terrabytes.

5. Here's a fuzzy one...attachments on the file system are more safe from NSF corruption on an overloaded server...

*could be wrong disclaimer

Working Set toggling - make it easier! (26 Feb 2009)

And as well, I should just be able to right-click on an application and choose to add it to an existing or new working set. Right now you have to go to the working set dialog and re-find your target application. Not friendly.

Publish team calendar in iCal format (19 Feb 2009)

I asked this very at Lotusphere 2009's Ask The Developer session except I phrased it a different way. I first praised the team for giving us calendar federation in Notes 8.5 and how my users love it. Then asked when we'll be able to federate a Quickr Team Calendar. This amounts to the same request I guess since the federation is done via a feed.

Enable Foundations to merge into an existing Domino Domain (25 Jan 2009)

It looks like this idea has now been implemented. Reading the slides of Lotusphere session INV108 the slide talks about Branch Office Support. Here's the bullets.

--Support deployment of Lotus Foundations Start as branch office solution for organizations with existing Lotus Domino infrastructure at head office.
--Deploy Lotus Foundations in branch office but manage Lotus Foundations domino server as a node on enterprise server
--Lotus Domino systems and user administration for Foundations - done from Lotus Domino enterprise server
--Lotus Foundations administration - done either from branch office or locally

Add a Quickr email option checkbox to automatically limit access to a file to the email recipients (14 Jan 2009)

@2 Quickr Share? An OGS leak?

All Db to never show the left-hand navigator (10 Jan 2009)

yeah I hate that default navigator. Another option would be a database property to hide it.

SSO between Lotus Notes Client and Domino HTTP Access (10 Jan 2009)

If this were possible it would integrate Quickr Places (HTTP access) with Notes. Nobody likes to login more than once.

Traveler should support the Pre when it ships (09 Jan 2009)

@Bruce - TY, good vid. I am now enlightened. I have learned the proper way to express "I don't care". That is a life skill I have to this point in life lacked a suitable means to express. As you can see from the stats, I am making good use of this new found enablement. I owe you a beverage at the sphere.

@Craig - you make a good point, but I cannot start to care now or lose credibility (but you're on the right track).

Domino Search as Google Search (09 Jan 2009)

Definitely with Notes 8 this IS the default, though you can override it via preferences and a policy setting from what I recall.

Traveler should support the Pre when it ships (09 Jan 2009)

@Bruce

Ah, back at ya! I didn't know that was an option. I officially take a stand on the fence! Might be painful.

Traveler should support the Pre when it ships (09 Jan 2009)

Might be a risk, if the Pre doesn't sell well, of wasting development hours that could be dedicated to something else (i.e. making Notes work better on the top 3 selling phone platforms). On the other hand, its a great idea. How's that for one vote down and one up canceling out my vote entirely.

Make an SMTP/POP3 only version of the mail client part of Symphony (23 Dec 2008)

Making the licensing model strictly based on signed Notes ID created by Domino Servers make sense and will no in anyway harm IBM's revenue stream, only add admirers. Eliminate the need for a Notes ID for simple POP usages.

No Notes ID? >> POP/IMAP mode only

Have a Notes ID >> Adds ability to use a Domino server

I'm not sure if this has changed in 8.5, but if you configure a standalone Notes Client, the setup will insist on generating a self-signed ID file which, if you're not talking to Domino will be firstname lastname/firstnamelastname. Home users don't need ID's and it only complicates matters for them.

Also, for this to fly this will need better wizards that will allow the average user to setup pop and smtp especially for GMail which is not straightforward as you can see here

Integrate Quickr into Lotus Foundations (05 Nov 2008)

@Bruce Lill

Not sure what you mean by "force" Bruce.

Everything in Foundations is optional Bruce...don't want to use the firewall, don't turn it on...don't want to use DNS, don't turn it on...same goes for Quickr. Like Domino, it would just be a package you may choose not to install. Right now we don't have the option to deploy Quickr in a Foundations environment except on a separate server and I believe that it would have to be also a separate domain and directory (though there could be undocumented workarounds on that). I support a Quickr 8.1 release (running on Domino 8.0.2) in a different organization and support issues are non-existent once training is provided.

Make ideajam firewall friendly (28 Oct 2008)

@Bruce

Thanks, though I find it curious why others would vote this idea down just because they are not experiencing the issue. I imagine if they had the problem they would vote differently. But if a person does have this issue, they can't vote anyway, unless they happen to know they can workaround it by turning off the firewall so the voting will be skewed.

Funny, but those who are voting against this idea are logically saying they want Idea Jam to be Firewall Unfriendly :-)

This is a case where, voting abstention makes sense if its not affecting you IMHO

More programmatic control over printing from Notes (28 Oct 2008)

@Theo

Thanks for the heads up. This one is related to the the landscape printing idea. I don't see one that discusses background printing (e.g. printing from a scheduled agent to a printer)

{ Link }

P.S. I tried to link to the idea above, but that entry is not showing up in the dialog box that enable you to link to related ideas. Perhaps its a 64K barrier.

Full access on Quickr with Notes Client instead just a rudimental connector (26 Oct 2008)

I suspect IBM's answer is to use the Quickr Content Integrator

{ Link }

Its a bit too rich ($$$) for our company. Personally, when I'm in Notes I dislike popping into the browser and then logging into another system (maybe there is an SSO solution for this maybe?)

Getting relational with db2 (27 Oct 2008)

It would be helpful if they explained how to use federation to combine Notes and non-Notes data. I believe there are additional costs, but its definitely an opportunity.

Make ideajam firewall friendly (27 Oct 2008)

@Matt White

I understand the challenge of programming for all the flavors of browsers and configs in the wild. Hats off to you and believe me I feel your pain. I'm pretty plain jane in my config: I just just mainstream browsers (IE7 and Firefox 3) to access gmail, facebook, myspace, domino web, and a plethora of other sites and I have yet to run into any other site where I need to disable my Symantec firewall before clicking on a button, so I imagine there is something very unique about the voting system on Idea Jam.

I would guess that the Symantec firewall I am using is one that would have one of the largest corporate distributions. And so, as you're commercializing Idea Jam and it will therefore deploy in corporate environments that could be very similar to ours, I would imagine you'll be needing to change the voting system eventually. Better to change it before it happens to a CEO of some prospective company and it ends up being a deal breaker. So this suggestion is moreless a friendly heads up and remember, "The customer is always right" even if they aren't :-)

Tagging needs adding to Quickr (25 Oct 2008)

Tagging is the Web 2.0 equivalent of foldering IMHO, though its not hierarchical. This is especially lacking in the Quickr Entry product which has no way to categorize docs at all.

@1 and 2 - The current policy setting for setting the homepage have severe limitations. This idea is not completed.

Make any NSF the Home Page via Policies (31 Aug 2008)

@2 Gregg - that policy doesn't do what I am asking...I've checked into it and it only gives you a welcome page that you add to the bookmark.nsf which has severe limitations e.g. no custom images.

Support Standard External USB Drives for IDB Backup (31 Aug 2008)

Is this support documented? Note I am specifically speaking of USB for IDB backup. If its changed I'll withdraw the idea. I am going by the following 2 knowledge base articles:

Let Quickr Entry Use Folders (11 Apr 2008)

Bruce, screenshot uploaded. I made it the max size supported on Idea Jam (450px). A higher max size would be better though...idealy 600 px. Hope this helps.

Couple notes:

--In Firefox, if you move your mouse over the "twistee" looking thing to the left of the Time label, it highlights, but there is no code to change views. Its almost as if the designers were toying with the idea of having different filters over the view like "by folder, by tag", etc. but pulled it out, except for this mouseover remnant. In the Quickr forum someone confirmed that Quickr Entry is a flat view only (no folders or by category or by tag). The only filter available over this flat view is Time.

--If you drag a file folder to the upload target, it ignores all sub folders

--In the Explorer connector, when you are working with an Entry place, the function to create folders is not available. Dragging folders into the Explorer connector results in sub folders being ignored

Stamp correct timestamp on mail retrieved via POP (02 Mar 2008)

Performance Tuning FAQ or Utility for Notes 8 (12 Feb 2008)

Update:
Wow, John Head made my day with a great tip on his blog about excluding the Notes program and data directories from Symantec Antivirus scanning. Huge difference. Maybe we can roll out Notes 8 after all.

See John's tips here:

Performance Tuning FAQ or Utility for Notes 8 (08 Feb 2008)

I noticed a noticeable performance improvement with each Notes 8 beta (Symphony too) so am hoping that 8.0.1 shows a similar incremental performance improvement...should be any day now.
Meanwhile, I have stopped the Notes 8 pilot after the second admin user (besides me) commmented that he was considering reverting to Notes 7.0.2. I quickly showed him the Basic option (nlnotes.exe) and he's fine. Even I am finding its only practical to run basic on my 3-4 year old IBM laptop which is 1.5 GHz and 2 GB of RAM. At what CPU level other people finding speed is not a big issue?

Persistent Login for HTTP (03 Jan 2008)

Absolutely needed. This is part of strategy to gain user acceptance and eliminate usability obstacles.

Action Bar Controller (30 Dec 2007)

Oh I hate crawling through every view and form changing sizes, colours, etc. of the action bar...very unfriendly.

SQL Interface for Notes Apps (30 Dec 2007)

An SQL interface to Notes data would be perfect for reporting as Bob Balaban noted in his blog about NSFDB2.
{ Link }

It just would be nice to have SQL against an NSF without the need to go full-blown to NSFDB2 which is not an option on platforms like System i anyway.
